What products should I buy for my situation?

Here we will tell you about using our products for a variety of situations, including cats who are not using their litter boxes. We'll discuss litter box aversion, calming cats in general, introducing new cats to the household and more.

Cat Faeries is asked questions all the time, but unfortunately we do not have the time to answer all of your questions via email so we have written up a guide to help you figure out what to order for your situation. We do this so you don't over more than what you really need, or not order enough. We also thought you might like an idea of how long it could take to correct a problem. Keep in mind each cat and situation is unique. There are no rules or guarantees about how long it will take to solve a behavior problem. We aren't telling you what to buy we are offering suggestions based on our years of experience and customer feedback.

Why do cats pee outside of the box?

Cats do not wake up one day and decide to be naughty and make you miserable and drenched in cat pee! There is ALWAYS a trigger or two, and sometimes more causes of this problem. It could be medical, so before you do anything have your vet test the cat's bladder, kidneys, thyroid, blood sugar, and arthritis. Cats can't tap you on the shoulder or send a text message to inform you that they don't feel well. Instead they might urinate or poop on something in the house to get your attention.

Most likely it is stress - something is bothersome or annoying to the cat. Common annoyances our our indoor cats are: feral cats who come up to the house, uninvited neighbor's cats,birds and squirrels, mice in the house, dirty litter boxes, or not using the same litter consistently. Cats generally do not like a hood on the litter box. And many cats hate those robot little boxes which self clean. Cats can't tell us with words, only actions. Product alone may not solve the problems, so if you don't remove or correct the triggers you are fighting an uphill battle.

Peeing Outside The Box and/or Spraying

We think of this problem in three groups and classify them as:
Mild Case - Moderate Case - Severe Case

Mild Case

• If only one cat is urinating or spraying, or pooping on the floor
• If the urine or spraying problem began less than 3 months ago
• If this happens sporadically or several times a week, or occasionally
• If there is cat urine in only one room
• If there is cat urine in one favorite spot, maybe two spots in that room
• If cat(s) use their litter boxes 95% of the time
• There is occasional fighting
  

Solving this problem could take about 2 or 3 months (sometimes longer) of diligent and daily product usage. You may need to use these products "as needed" longer or indefinitely for reinforcement. Most cats will stop, other cats won't stop completely, but the problem is usually lessened so its a rare occurrence and most people feel they can live with that.

Convivial House Cat spray is used to spot treat the areas where you have found urine. You'll use 1 to 2 times a day for 6 to 8 weeks. You don't need a lot of it, no more than 1 or 2 quirts applied to a 7 inch soiled spot. You do need faithful and consistent usage of it.

Moderate Case

• If one or two cats are urinating or spraying or both
• If the urine or spraying problem began 3 to 12 months ago
• If this happens several times a week, sometimes daily
• If there is cat urine in mostly one room, perhaps one other room
• If there is cat urine in 3 - 5 places per room
• If cat(s) generally use litter boxes
• There is fighting which happens several times a week

Solving this problem could take any where from 2 to 6 months (sometimes longer) of diligent daily product usage. Once that period of faithful usage is over may need to use products "as needed" indefinitely. Please note that most cats do stop, but sometimes a cat won't stop completely. In that case the problem is usually lessened so that its a very rare occurrence and most people feel they can live with that.

Convivial House Cat spray to spot treat the areas where you have found urine once a day for 8 weeks - twice a day would be even better if you can fit it into your schedule. One or two squirts applied to a 7 inch spot is all you usually need. It needs to be used daily and it is applied to surfaces. After 8 weeks you might be able to cut back every other day or a few times a week, you'll need to experiment.

Severe Case

• You are at your wits end and feel like you've lost control of your home - it's time for YOU to reclaim it from feisty felines
• If 2 or more cats are urinating or spraying or both
• If there is cat urine in more than two rooms
• If the urine or spraying problem began more than 12 months ago or has been on and off for many years
• If this happens on a daily basis, several times a day
• If there are so many urine stains you can't count them all
• If cat(s) seldom or sporadically use litter boxes
• There is fighting which can cause injury, daily to many times a week
  

Solving this problem could take about 3 to 6 months (perhaps longer) of diligent and daily product usage. It's very hard to say how many months it will take when the case is severe. You could be "in for the long haul" but we have seen miraculous things happen in these tough cases, and they can even happen quickly. Other times it's a slow process. Count on using the products for at least 4 or 5 months on a daily basis. Because the problem is so old and severe you might never get it to stop completely, but we should be able to get it so that it's an occasional problem.. You may need to use products "as needed" or indefinitely.

Cat Poop On the Floor

If your cat has suddenly begun to pee or poop on the floor call your vet and have the cat seen. It could be a health problem, especially in older cats and arthritis comes to mind which makes getting in and out of a litter box painful. The cat might not be liking something about the litter box.

Convivial House Cat spray We suggest you spray it where the cat peed or pooped twice a day for a few days, and re-evaluate your litter box maintenance.

Flower Essences are an excellent idea. Calm and Serene might be a good choice as is Multi Cat Household.

When the situation is "looking good" you might not need to use the products again, or you'll want to use them occasionally for maintenance. Most cats enjoy the flower essences as a forever-thing.

Fighting Felines

If you have more than one cat the odds are there will be the occasional hissy fit. These generally happen once or twice a week when one cat insults another, tries to crowd another cat out of a sunny spot on the floor, or feels the other is getting more attention, etc. This is all quite normal. But when there is screaming, wild hissing, swatting and biting, and it happens nearly daily then we have Fighting Felines who need some calming down.

Solving this problem can happen quickly or can take several months of dedication from you to provide a peaceful home and to use the correct calming and friend-making products.

Convivial House Cat spray can be used "here and there" throughout the house. The objects that we suggest are sofas, sleeping areas, sunny spots, in closets, under beds, in cat beds, etc once or twice a day for 6 - 8 weeks. Nervous Cats

Some cats are naturally "fraidy cats." Everything and anything can spook them. If we can provide calming relief for the cat there's a very good chance that the cat's personality will blossom and thrive. You may see your cat go from being timid to bold or at least self confident and happy!

Solving this problem could be ongoing. Some cats run when they hear the door bell or when visitors come to the house and this may never change. Flower essences give us the hope that it will and that your cat and visitors can enjoy each other. For overall and daily happiness you'll see that your cat will start to feel better very soon!

When the situation is "looking good " you might not need to use the products again, however really nervous or jittery cats will never be completely as laid back as other cats. Aggressive Cats

Some cats are naturally crabby and bossy which can lead to aloofness, hissing at the other cats, and unprovoked fighting. Sometimes these cats don't even like some of their human housemates. Let's chill out a cranky kitty. Make sure that the cat is healthy and pain free. Illness and even certain medications can effect a cat's personality and behavior. Ask your vet about medication.

Solving the problem is most likely going to be an ongoing thing. If you've got an alpha cat who takes that job VERY seriously he/she will mostly likely always be Top Cat and rule with an iron paw! But let's mellow kitty out who will ultimately be happier not always being in charge!

Introducing a New Cat Or Merging Two Households of Cats

Solving this problem can happen quickly or can take several months - even up to a full year! You need to be patient and keep a cool head, take it slowly, as well as provide a peaceful home. Supervise slow and calm "get acquainted sessions" ending each session on a positive note (stop and separate the cats before there's any serious hissing or attempts at fighting). Use the correct calming and friend-making products every day until they've bonded and become friends.

Cats Scratching on Furniture and Rugs

Solving this problem is tricky. Cats often can't resist a sofa covered in a nice textured fabric. But you can help by trimming the cat's nails about every 10 - 14 days. Also provide a "cat condo" that's taller than 4 feet so that it won't tip over. Cats love condos with tiers for resting and playing. Most cats enjoy a mix of carpet and sisal.

Convivial House Cat spray used daily helps slow down the frequency of cats scratching at furniture. It does not work 100% of the time, your cat might still scratch on occasion. Spray daily for a few weeks to see if your cat responds and stops scratching. You may need to use the spray several times a week for reinforcement. Convivial House Cat spray is more effective on "vertical scratching" than on "horizontal scratching (rugs).
